A capture from the interior of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Спас на Крови) along the Griboyedova Canal in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The name refers to the blood of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who was assassinated here, on the 13th of March 1881, by anarchist conspirators. In 1883 Tsar Alexander III began the construction of the church as a memorial to his father. Work progressed slowly and the church was not completed until 1907. Architecturally the church differs from Saint Petersburg's other churches and cathedrals that predominantly are built in Baroque and Neoclassic style. The Savior on Blood harks back to medieval Russian architecture in the spirit of romantic nationalism. It intentionally resembles the 17th-century Yaroslavl churches and the celebrated Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, the church was ransacked and looted, badly damaging its interior. The Soviet government closed the church in the early 1930’s. After the Second World War, it was used as a warehouse for vegetables, leading to the sardonic name of “Savior on Potatoes”.

In 1970, management of the Church passed to Saint Isaac's Cathedral (then used as a highly profitable museum) and proceeds from the Cathedral were funnelled back into restoring the Church. It was reopened in 1997 but has not been reconsecrated and does not function as a full-time place of worship, it is a Museum of Mosaic. Even before the Revolution it never functioned as a public place of worship, having been dedicated exclusively to the memory of the assassinated tsar and only memorial services were held here.

The fountain Friendship of Nations (Дружба народов СССР) at All-Russia Exhibition Centre (VVT), formally known as VDNKh, in Moscow, Russia. The fountain was built in the early 1950s and the 16 girls around the sheaf of sunflowers and hemp in the middle represent the 16 Soviet Socialistic Republics that formed Soviet Union at that time. 15 now are independent countries, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Moldavia, Kirghizstan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. The 16th represent Karelo-Finnish SSR that existed from 1940 until it was merged back into the Russian SFSR in 1956.

Ivan the Great Bell Tower (Колокольня Ивана Великого) is the tallest of the bell towers ringing the Moscow Kremlin complex, with a total height of 81 meter. It was built for the Dormition, Archangel and Annunciation cathedrals, which do not have their own belfries, and is said to mark Moscow's precise geographic centre.

An autumn capture of the Church of Sophia (Sofia kyrka) at Södermalm in Stockholm, Sweden.

The church was designed by architect Gustaf Hermansson in Rhenish Romanesque style. Construction began in 1902 at the highest point of Vita Bergen (the White Mountains), 46 meters above sea level. Four years later the church was opened. The church is named after King Oscar II's wife, Sophia of Nassau.

The fountain Four Seasons at Night (Четыре времени года Ночью), located between the Manezh Square and the Alexander Garden in Moscow, Russia. The fountain and scupltures are created by Georgian-Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.

The Kul Sharif mosque (Мечеть Кул-Шариф) in Kazan Kremlin, Kazan, capital of Tatarstan, Russia is the largest mosque in Russia, and in Europe outside of Istanbul.

Originally, the mosque was built in the Kazan Kremlin in the 16th century. It was named after Qolşärif who served there. Qolshärif died with his numerous students while defending Kazan from Russian forces in 1552. It is believed that the building featured minarets, both in the form of cupolas and tents. Its design was traditional for Volga Bulgaria, although elements of early Renaissance and Ottoman architecture could have been used as well. In 1552, during the storming of Kazan it was destroyed by Ivan the Terrible.
Tatar scholars speculate as to whether some elements of Qolşärif mosque can be seen in Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow (8 minarets, a central cupola, not typical for Russian architecture). Since 1996 the mosque has been rebuilt in Kazan Kremlin, although its look is decisively modern. Its inauguration on July 24, 2005 marked the beginning of celebrations dedicated to the Millennium of Kazan.

Kievskaya Metro station (Станция метро Киевская) in the Moscow Metro is named after the nearby Kievsky Railway station. Three of the Moscow Metro lines connect at Kievskaya, this picture is from the station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line. Kievskaya was opened in 1953 and is lavishly decorated in the quasi-baroque style that predominated in the early 1950s. The plastered ceiling is decorated with a series of 24 frescoes by various artists depicting life in Ukraine. This large mosaic at the end of the platform commemorates the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Russia and Ukraine.

Construction of the church started during the reign of Charles X of Sweden, and the church is named after Princess Catherine, mother of the king, wife of John Casimir, Palsgrave of Pfalz-Zweibrücken and half-sister of Gustavus Adolphus. The original architect was Jean de la Vallée. The construction was severely delayed due to shortage of funds.

In 1723 the church, together with half of the buildings in the parish, was completely destroyed in a major fire. Rebuilding started almost immediately, under supervision of Göran Josua Adelcrantz, the city architect, who designed a larger, octagonal tower.

May 17, 1990, the church burned down again. Almost nothing but the external walls remained. Architect Ove Hidemark was responsible for rebuilding the church, which was reopened in 1995. The new organ was built by J. L. van den Heuvel Orgelbouw in the Netherlands.

Several famous Swedes are buried in the cemetery surrounding the church, most notably the assassinated Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. Nationally popular Dutch-Swedish singer Cornelis Vreeswijk is another example.

This is in my opinion the most beautiful of our 13 cathedrals domkyrkor in Sweden, the Cathedral of Saint Mary Sankta Maria Domkyrka in Swedish. Out of the many churches that existed in medieval Visby only one remains in service, Saint Mary's Cathedral 13 other remains as church ruins. Construction of the church, dedicated to Virgin Mary, begun in the late 1100s on funds donated by German merchants. The church also known as Our dear wifes church during medieval times was originally built as a guest church for German merchants but after a fire destroyed the German parish church of Saint Nicolai the church was inaugurated as a parish church for both the German and Gutnish parishes. After the church of Saint Hans was abandoned in 1533 the church of Saint Mary remained the only parish church of Visby. Many of the other churches were burnt down when Lübeck invaded Visby in 1525, but Saint Mary's was spared. When the Diocese of Visby was founded in 1572, Saint Mary becomes a cathedral.

Saint Lawrence (Sankt Lars in Swedish) is a church ruin in Visby on the island Gotland, Sweden. The church is named after Saint Lawrence who was martyred on a hot grill. Sometimes the church has been called Saint Anna (Sankta Anna) the mother of the Virgin Mary.
The church was built in the central parish around 1210-1220. In the same cemetery a German parish church, Holy Trinity (Drotten in Swedish), was built around 1240. The church was abandoned after the Reformation. Architecturally, Saint Lawrence has its models in Orthodox churches, and it has been wrongly suggested that it would have been a Russian church. It’s more reasonable to imagine an architect influenced by Russian architecture.
